Silla and Rise
– Silla and Rise were a musical group consisting of members from the Inuit throat singing group Silla performing alongside global-grooves producer/percussionist Rise Ashen. Active from 2016 until 20221 they released three full length albums to national acclaim.
Biography
Silla’s members Charlotte Qamaniq and Cynthia Pitsiulak from Nunavut, have worked to put traditional throat singing into a modern context, and keep it thriving in spite of the historical and modern threats posed by colonialism.
Rise’s musical vision was forged at the crossroads of underground dance music and world music bringing together a broad spectrum of musical ideas from different cultures with the common thread of a driving beat to match the rhythmic nature of katajjaq.
This driving percussive force is something that can be felt instinctively in the gut; a gravity that draws the entire body into action and doesn’t let go until the final note. Known for breaking social and musical barriers, Silla and Rise was a blending of the divergent, one part technology driven exploration and another rooted deeply in tradition.
