Biography
Silla are an acclaimed Inuit throat-singing duo renowned for blending traditional songs with a wide range of contemporary music genres. Comprising Charlotte Qamaniq from Iglulik and Cynthia Pitsiulak from Kimmirut, Nunavut, Silla has been captivating audiences with their hypnotic performances since 2005.
The duo’s name, Silla, comes from the Inuktitut word Sila, which encompasses concepts of weather, land, spirit, cunning, and intelligence. This name honors the deep spirituality and cultural traditions that have kept Inuit throat singing alive, despite attempts to suppress it during Canada’s colonial history.
Silla has earned widespread recognition for their artistry, receiving two JUNO Award nominations for their work as Silla and Rise and winning two Summer Solstice Indigenous Music Awards. Their music is a powerful testament to resilience, culture, and creative evolution.
